Covering the bases 8/3/2025: Brewers 14, Nationals 3

Offense again led the day as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 14-3 win Sunday. The Brewers had 16 hits Sunday, bringing their total to 56 hits and 38 runs in the series. The 56 hits is a club record for a three-game series. That swept the six-game series series from the Nationals. That is the sixth time in Brewers history they have won a season series of at least six games – the second in the last couple weeks (Los Angeles Dodgers, also six games).

The Brewers, with MLB's best record at 67-44, also maintained their two-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central following the Cubs' 5-3 walk-off win over the Balitmore Orioles.

FIRST BASE: Road warriors

An unsung aspect of the Brewers' success since late May has been their performance on the road. Sunday's triumph gave the Brewers a 21-6 mark in their last 27 roadies. In those games, they have a plus-87 run differential. The Brewers' run differential for the season is plus-119.

SECOND BASE: Henderson's spot

The Brewers called upon Logan Henderson to take a spot start for Jacob Misiorowski (more on that below) and he responded with pretty much what they needed from the rookie right-hander. While Henderson was only able to get through 4⅓ innings, he limited the Nats to three hits and one run, while walking two and striking out four. Henderson drove with his parents from Pennsylvania, where the Triple-A Nashville Sounds were playing the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, to Washington. Henderson will likely get another couple starts with Misiorowski sidelined.

THIRD BASE: Better at the bottom

With another double-digit game, seven players had two hits, six of those were in the starting lineup. Caleb Durbin replaced Anthony Seigler at third base as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and went 2-for-2, scored twice and drove in a run. Durbin took over in the No. 7 slot. Brandon Lockridge, hitting eight and playing right for the injured Jackson Chourio, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while No. 9 hitter Joey Ortiz went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. The bottom three spots in the order went a combined 20-for-42 with 17 RBIs and 10 runs scored in the series.

HOME PLATE: Turang's twosome

With Sal Frelick ailing and Chourio on the injured list, Brice Turang is once again hitting leadoff. It went very well Sunday. Turang had his first two-homer game in his MLB career, the first a two-run shot to right in the second inning to make it 3-0 and the second another two-run blast also to right in the seventh inning to make it 12-1. The second homer gave Turang a career-high eight homers. He hit seven last year and six as a rookie in 2023.

EXTRA BASES: The Miz on the IL

⚾ All-Star rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski went on the 15-day injured list due to a bruised left shin. Misiorowski sustained the injury when he was hit be a comebacker in his start against the Cubs. Misiorowski said he expects to only miss the minimum 15 days, putting him on track to start the opener of a three-game series vs. the Cincinnati Reds on July 14 (the IL date was backdated to Thursday). That also means Misiorowski would be on track to start one of the last two games of the crucial five-game set against the Cubs in his second start back. It wouldn't be surprising if the Brewers made this move to preserve Misiorowski's innings the rest of the season.

⚾ The Brewers head to Atlanta for the second half of this six-game road trip. Right-hander Quinn Priester will start the opener against Atlanta righty Erick Fedde. In 20 games with the Brewers, Priester is 10-2 with a 3.27 ERA. Atlanta has not formally announced a starter. Freddy Peralta and Jose Quintana will pitch the final two games of the series for the Brewers.
