Covering the bases 8/9/2025: Brewers 7, Met 4

For the third time this season, the Milwaukee Brewers have won eight in a row, the latest streak being achieved with a 7-4 win over the New York Mets on Friday at American Family Field. The MLB-leading Brewers (72-44) still hold a five-game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs clobbered the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1. The Brewers have won 23 of their last 27 games.

FIRST BASE: Bullpen shines

With right-hander Tobias Myers only lasting 3⅓ innings in a spot start, the Brewers' bullpen needed to step up – and they did. Left-hander Aaron Ashby was the only one to go more than one inning, tossing 1⅔ innings and yielding a run on two hits. After that right-hander Shelby Miller (in his Brewers debut), left-hander Jared Koenig, setup man Abner Uribe and closer Trevor Megill combined for four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.

SECOND BASE: More little things

There were two more cases of the Brewers capitalizing on mistakes by the opposition and really making them hurt – and one case of the Brewers turning potential disaster into spectacular defense. The first came in the second inning when Joey Ortiz hit a two-out, bases-loaded grounder up the middle that Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor should have made, but he inexplicably had the ball bounce off his glove and into center, allowing a pair of runs to score and giving the Brewers a 2-1 lead. The second came in the four-run seventh inning when Isaac Collins hit a two-out grounder to third baseman Ronny Mauricio, who came on as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning. Mauricio wasn't able to come up with the grounder, which was ruled a hit and allowed the go-ahead run to score. The Mauricio play also kept the inning alive for William Contreras to hit (see below). The Brewers showed the Mets what good defense is in the top of the fourth inning. Lindor hit a hard grounder to third baseman Anthony Seigler, who had the ball bounce off his chest. But Seigler quickly recovered, threw a bullet to Brice Turang at second and Turang made the quick turn and fired to Andrew Vaughn at first to nab Lindor and complete the double play.

THIRD BASE: Turang again

For the first time in his career, Turang has homered in back-to-back games. Turang hit a solo homer to center field in the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3. That extended his career-best total for a season to 10. Turang also had his first career two-homer game on Sunday against the Washington Nationals.

HOME PLATE: Contreras' second chance

Contreras hit what looked to be an inning-ending liner to right field in the seventh inning. But he got a redo after home plate umpire Ryan Additon ruled recently acquired Mets reliever Ryan Helsley had a pitch-timer violation, so there was no pitch and the count was reset to 1-0. Contreras didn't waste any time with his new lease on life and drilled the next pitch into the Brewers' bullpen in left-field for a two-run shot and a 7-4 lead. It was the 10th homer of the season for Contreras.

William Contreras made the most of this second chance and crushed a 2-run homer!

EXTRA BASES: Priester goes for sweep

⚾ Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.15 ERA) puts his 10-game unbeaten streak on the line in the series finale and a three-game sweep against Mets left-hander Sean Manaea (1-1, 3.52 ERA). Priester has developed into one of the rocks of the Brewers' rotation, turning in nine quality starts. He is coming off a seven-inning outing in a 3-1 win over Atlanta, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four. Manaea had a rough outing his last time out, going 5⅔ innings and giving up five runs in a 7-6, 10-inning loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Manaea recently returned from oblique and left elbow injuries.

⚾ The Brewers have sold out their last six games at American Family Field, with another likely Sunday with a Jacob Misiorowski T-shirt giveaway.
