Covering the bases 8/8/2025: Brewers 3, Mets 2

In the first game of a rematch of last year's NL Wild Card Series, the Milwaukee Brewers won their seventh straight, a 3-2 decision over the New York Mets. With the Chicago Cubs losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0, the Brewers extended their lead over the second-place Cubs in the NL Central to a season-high five games.

FIRST BASE: More little things

Blake Perkins reached on an error by Mets starter Kodai Senga to begin what would have been a three-run fifth inning and was on base when Brice Turang homered. Following the homer and with one out and one on, Sal Frelick swung and missed at a pitch out of the zone for what should have been the third strike. After a walk loaded the bases, Isaac Collins was hit by a pitch to score Joey Ortiz with the go-ahead run.

SECOND BASE: Bang-bang Turang

Don't you get the feeling that Turang could be a 20-homer guy if he wanted to be? Turang, a Platinum Glove second baseman who had his first career two-homer game Sunday, extended his career high to nine home runs with a two-run shot in the fifth inning that tied the game 2-2. Turang has career best in all three slash categories .276/.341/.391 and is just four RBIs shy of last year's career-high 57.

THIRD BASE: Wonderful Woodruff

"And that is what a horse looks like." Those were the words from Brewers play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson as right-hander Brandon Woodruff completed his day and walked off the mound. Woodruff turned in another superb outing, going a season-high seven innings, allowing three hits, including two solo homers, while walking two and striking out eight. In his six games since returning from 2023 shoulder surgery, Woodruff has struck out eight or more four times. The Brewers have won all six of Woodruff's starts and are 22-4 since he was activated. The only negative was Woodruff getting tagged for home runs by Juan Soto in the first inning and Starling Marte in the second, two of the first five batters .

HOME PLATE: Armed and dangerous

Walk-off wins are great, but usually you are talking about a game-winning hit. Very rarely do you get a tremendous defensive play to end the game. But that is what Perkins, a Gold Glove finalist last year, did with his one-hop throw from center field to catcher William Contreras, who slapped the tag on Marte, who was trying to score from second on Jeff McNeil's single for the final out of the game. The finish set off a celebration worthy of a playoff game.

EXTRA BASES: Myers gets spot start

⚾ Following the news earlier Friday that right-hander Logan Henderson was being placed on the 15-day injured list due to flexor strain, right-hander Tobias Myers was named the starter for Saturday's game. The Mets still have not announced a starter. Myers was the move to fill Henderson's roster spot. Myers has been at Triple-A most of this season, posting a 3.77 ERA in 12 starts at Nashville. Myers, who made two relief appearances for the Brewers in late July, has appeared in eight MLB games this season (five starts) with a 4.30 ERA in 23 innings.
