Covering the bases 8/6/2025: Brewers 5, Atlanta 4

The Milwaukee Brewers finished off a perfect road trip by beating Atlanta 5-4 Wednesday. That completed a three-game sweep of Atlanta following a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals. The six-game winning streak made the Brewers the first team in MLB this season to reach 70 wins. It also allowed the Brewers to keep their four-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1.

FIRST BASE: Vintage Quintana

Left-handed starter Jose Quintana turned in another solid start after a couple of rocky outings. Quintana allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings, walking none and striking out seven. It was the fourth time in his last five starts that Quintana allowed three runs or less.

SECOND BASE: Return of Sal

Sal Frelick was back in the lineup in his customary right field and leadoff positions after missing the last four games with left knee soreness. He picked up where he left off. Frelick fueld the Brewers' offense by going 2-for-4 with a walk. He didn't score or drive in a run, but his presence was certainly felt.

THIRD BASE: Vaughn reaches 12

Words will never truly explain what is happening with first baseman Andrew Vaughn, but the Brewers will ride this for however long it lasts. Vaughn extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games when he hit another homer, a solo shot in the fourth inning of Spencer Strider that snapped a 1-1 tie. In those 12 games, Vaughn is hitting .422 with five homers and 16 RBIs. In 22 games with the Brewers, Vaughn has 28 RBIs, the fifth-most in that time span in MLB history.

HOME PLATE: Perkins percolating

Blake Perkins is making up for lost time. Perkins, who made his 2025 debut on July 18 after fracturing his right shin in spring training, was a triple shy of the cycle, including hitting his third homer of the road trip, a two-out two-run blast in the fifth inning to put the Brewers up 5-1. Perkins went 3-for-5 with two run scored.

EXTRA BASES: Day off, then the Mets

⚾ The Brewers are off Thursday, then return to American Family Field to open a six-game homestand with three vs. the New York Mets in a rematch of the unforgettable NL Wild Card Series from last year. Right-hander Brandon Woodruff (3-0, 2.22 ERA) goes for the Brewers against Mets right-hander Kodai Senga (7-3, 2.31 ERA). Woodruff has been sensational in his five starts since returning from 2023 shoulder surgery, walking four and striking out 37 in 28⅓ innings. Senga has somewhat struggled in his last three starts, allowing 11 runs and 11 walks in 12 innings.

⚾ Right-handed reliever Shelby Miller could finally make his Brewers debut Friday. Miller, acquired by the Brewers at the trade deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been rehabbing a strained right forearm.
