Covering the bases 8/4/2025: Brewers 3, Atlanta 1

Beginning the second half of a six-game road trip, the Milwaukee Brewers continued their stellar play since the All-Star break by beating Atlanta 3-1. It was the Brewers' fourth win in a row, keeping them with the best record in MLB at 68-44. Thanks to the Cincinnati Reds' 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs, the Brewers now lead the NL Central by three games over the second-place Cubs.

FIRST BASE: Close one

After a big offensive weekend in which the Brewers had a club-record 56 hits and scored 38 runs in a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, Milwaukee was tested by an injury-riddled Atlanta team. Jurickson Profar led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer, which stood until the Brewers scored three in the fourth inning.

SECOND BASE: Late-inning relief

The tight game got the Brewers' late-game relievers involved again. Right-hander Abner Uribe danced in and out of trouble in the eighth, then closer Trevor Megill pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save. It was the first outings in a week for the two key late-inning relievers. Uribe walked pinch-hitter Marcell Ozuna to open the eighth, then gave up a one-out single to Matt Olson, putting runners on the corners. But Uribe got out of it when Drake Baldwin lined out to shortstop Joey Ortiz and Sean Murphy lined out to center fielder Blake Perkins.

THIRD BASE: Collins' clout

One of the bigger surprises this season for the Brewers has been Isaac Collins. He has been the regular left fielder and was named NL Rookie of the Month for July on Monday. He celebrated by cranking out his seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning that wound up being the only runs the Crew scored. Collins hit .321 in June and had a .411 on-base percentage, drawing 11 walks. All of those led NL rookies.

HOME PLATE: Priester prevails

Right-hander Quinn Priester continues to elevate his profile. And as games increase in importance, he would put himself in a position he never imagined. Priester overcame yielding a first-pitch homer to allow only just one more hit in seven innings, walking two and striking out four. That gives him an 11-2 record and a 3.15 ERA. Priester has won his last 10 decisions, tying the club record. He matched the mark held by Chris Bosio and Cal Eldred, both doing it in 1992. It was also Priester's nine quality start.

EXTRA BASES

⚾ Right-hander Freddy Peralta will start Game 2 for the Brewers against Atlanta left-hander Joey Wentz. Peralta is 12-5 with a 3.08 ERA, while Wentz is 2-2 with a 5.02 ERA.
