Covering the bases 8/28/2025: D'backs 6, Brewers 4

Settling for a series split after winning the first two games of the four-game set, the Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 6-4 decision to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at American Family Field. The NL Central-leading Brewers' lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs remained at 6½ games thanks to the San Francisco Giants' 4-3 win over the Cubs.

FIRST BASE: Outfield defense shines

There is no secret that the Brewers have a really good defensive team. But the outfield has turned in a few standout plays recently. The latest entries came from center fielder Blake Perkins and right fielder Sal Frelick.

SECOND BASE: Frelick's quick start

Frelick has fit in nicely as a leadoff hitter. His latest statement in the Summer of Sal was a homer to open the bottom of the first inning, giving the Brewers a brief 1-0 lead. It was Frelick's 10th homer of the season and third leadoff bomb.

THIRD BASE: Quintana's short start

On a day the Brewers needed a little length out of left-handed starter Jose Quintana, he did just the opposite. Quintana was tagged for six runs on five hits and four walks in 3⅔ innings. He gave up a pair of three-spots, one in the second and another in the third, then had two runners on in the fourth. That forced right-hander Tobias Myers to go 3⅓ innings and Easton McGee two innings, which helped saved a beleaguered Brewers bullpen.

HOME PLATE: Stifled by rookie

The Brewers have had a lot of comebacks against proven pitchers, but they were unable to solve a right-hander making his MLB debut. Taylor Rashi, a 29-year-old, pitched the final three innings, surrendering two hits and two walks, while striking out three to pick up a save. The Brewers had a threat in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on first and second, but the D'backs stuck with the rookie, who got Christian Yelich to ground out to end it.

EXTRA BASES: Off to Toronto

⚾ In what could be a World Series preview, Freddy Peralta (15-5, 2.68 ERA) and the Brewers open a three-game series against Shane Bieber (1-0, 1.50 ERA) and the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. The MLB leader in wins, Peralta had an up-and-down last start, going five innings, allowing two hits, while walking four and striking out six on Saturday in a 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Bieber made his season and Blue Jays debut a week ago today following his recovery from Tommy John surgery, allowing two hits over six innings, walking none and striking out nine in a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

⚾ Outfielder Jackson Chourio was back with the team and is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list following his strained right hamstring.
