Covering the bases 8/26/2025: Brewers 9, D'backs 8

With the wear and tear on the bullpen becoming an increasing factor, the Milwaukee Brewers overcame blowing 6-0 and 8-3 leads to pull off a walk-off 9-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday at American Family Field. The Brewers, who have MLB's best record at 83-50, now have a 6½-game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs, who lose to the San Francisco Giants 5-2, in the NL Central.
FIRST BASE: Turang, Contreras go deep
Brice Turang's torrid – and powerful – August continued. So did William Contreras'. Turang, the left-handed-hitting Brewers second baseman, hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to put the Crew up 8-3. It was the 15th homer of the season, adding to his career year in the category, and the ninth of August. Turang's previous season-best total for homers was seven last year. Before that, Contreras continued his power surge in August with his seventh blast of the month, a monster two-run shot in a five-run third inning.
SECOND BASE: A solid Miz
With Brewers rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski having struggled in his last couple outings, the pressure was on for a solid outing. And for much of Tuesday, the Miz was good. He didn't allow a hit until Ketel Marte reached on an infield single leading off the fourth. After a delay for Corbin Carroll to fix a contact, he struck out. Then Pavin Smith hit a ground-rule double down the right-field line and Gabriel Moreno rocketed a three-run homer to make it a 6-3 game. Misiorowski's final stat line was five innings, four hits, three runs, one walk, 10 strikeouts. He threw 93 pitches, the most of his brief MLB career.
THIRD BASE: Bullpen bends
It was a matter of time before the Brewers' bullpen started showing some cracks. After all, the relief corps has, for the most part, been pretty nails most of the season and carried a huge workload. Right-hander Tobias Myers coughed up a three-run seventh inning and left-hander Jared Koenig two in the eighth as the D'backs rallied to tie it. Newcomer Shelby Miller came in to get out of an eighth-inning jam and pitch a scoreless ninth, which included a terrific play by shortstop Andruw Monasterio. No doubt that there will be transactions to give the bullpen some fresh arms. Closer Trevor Megill, setup man Abner Uribe and long reliever Aaron Ashby were unavailable after their recent workloads.
HOME PLATE: Collins to the rescue
With everything else that had transpired entering the bottom of the ninth, the Brewers were in desperate need of a walk-off win. The D'backs made them work for it, but the Brewers came through. Contreras hit a leadoff single and was replaced by pinch-runner Brandon Lockridge. Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn drew walks to load the bases. That brought up Sal Frelick, who hit a liner to center fielder Alek Thomas, with Lockridge sticking at third. Isaac Collins sent everyone home with good vibes by launching a sacrifice fly to deep right field, easily scoring Lockridge for the Crew's 10th walk-off win
EXTRA BASES: Priester streak on line
⚾ Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.44 ERA) will make his fourth attempt at win No. 12 on the season and look to keep his streak of winning 10 straight decisions intact when he faces D'backs right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.63 ERA). Priester gutted out 4⅓ innings in his last start Thursday vs. the Cubs. While walking five, Priester allowed one run on three hits and a hit batter, while striking out four. Nelson has been uneven in his last three starts, allowing 12 runs on 17⅔ innings with only two walks while striking out 16.
⚾ While this year's schedule is light on NL Central foes in September, the 2026 schedule that was released Tuesday has a heavy dose of division games. That includes two series against the Cubs, although those come in the first nine days of September. Six of the eight series in the final month of 2026 are two more than what the Crew have this year. The Brewers will open the season at home vs. the Chicago White Sox. Another schedule highlight (lowlight?) is playing the A's in Las Vegas at their Triple-A affiliate's stadium. It is one of two series the A's are playing in Vegas. Could that be a test for playing more games in their future home city as it gets closer to their stadium opening?
