Covering the bases 8/24/2025: Giants 4, Brewers 3

On a day in which the Milwaukee Brewers celebrated the life of the late Bob Uecker, the Brewers were unable to come up with another does of Uecker Magic as they blew a ninth-inning lead and fell to the San Francisco Giants 4-3 Sunday at American Family Field. Despite an emotional pregame ceremony hosted by Bob Costas, the Brewers fell to 81-50 – still the best record in MLB – and saw their lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs drop to five games in the NL Central after the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.
If you missed it, you can watch the ceremony here. The great conversation between Brewers announcers Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder with Hall of Famers Robin Yount and George Brett can be found here.
FIRST BASE: Patrick's spot
Chad Patrick made another spot start for the Brewers, following his last outing in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Patrick, a key early-season contributor to the rotation before going down to Triple-A, turned in another solid outing, going 5⅓ innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts. He is likely headed back to Nashville to give the bullpen another arm, but he has shown a reliability this season that bodes well for the future.
SECOND BASE: Durbin's blast
Caleb Durbin just seems to pick his spots to come through for the Brewers. Having displayed a pretty decent defensive game at third base this season, the rookie cranked out his eighth homer of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning, to snap a 2-2 tie. Durbin also doubled and scored in the third inning.
THIRD BASE: Yelich takes the wheel
It was only fitting that Christian Yelich came through with one of the biggest hits of the day. The player who developed a deep relationship with Uecker, Yelich not only doubled and scored the Brewers' first run in the second inning, but he tied the game 2-2 with an RBI single in the third to score Durbin.
HOME PLATE: Megill stumbles again
In no way is it time to panic about closer Trevor Megill. He has been a workhorse and dependable this entire season. But for the second time in this series, Megill coughed up a ninth-inning lead. Unlike Friday's blown save, the Brewers were unable to come out on top. Entering with a 3-2 lead, Megill gave up a leadoff double to Matt Chapman, then struck out Wilmer Flores before Luis Matos – a thorn in the Brewers' side all weekend – delivered a single, moving Chapman to third. After striking out pinch-hitter Rafael Devers, Megill walked Jung Ho Lee. Heliot Ramos then singled to center, with Chapman and Matos scoring easily to put the Giants up 4-3. It was only Megill's sixth blown save in 36 opportunities.
EXTRA BASES: D'backs come to Am Fam
⚾ The Arizona Diamondbacks visit American Family Field for a three-game series. With the rotation being pushed back a day, right-hander Brandon Woodruff (4-1, 2.47 ERA) is back on the mound and looking to bounce back from his first loss of the season. Woodruff allowed three runs in 4⅓ innings in a 4-1 loss to the Cubs in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Going for the D'backs is left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (5-7, 5.40 ERA). Rodriguez has allowed four or more runs in four of his last eight starts.
