Covering the bases 8/23/2025: Giants 7, Brewers 1

Sending out a starting lineup that had a spring training feel, the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Francisco Giants 7-1 Saturday at American Family Field. The Brewers (81-49) started an infield of Jake Bauers at first base, Caleb Durbin at second, Andruw Monasterio at shortstop and Andrew Seigler at third. The Brewers saw their lead in the NL Central over the second-place Chicago Cubs fall to six games after the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels 12-1. Sunday will include the tribute to the late Bob Uecker during the pregame. The ceremony will be televised on FanDuel Sports Network at 12:15 p.m. CT.
FIRST BASE: More defense
Catcher William Contreras, the walk-off hero from Friday, turned in a dazzling defensive play for a crucial out before things got out of hand. Also, Monasterio had a really nice catch.
SECOND BASE: Freddy was fine
It was another prototypical outing for Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta, but he wasn't able to extend his MLB-leading win total to 16. Peralta went five shutout innings, allowing three hits but also issuing four walks while striking out six. Peralta threw 96 pitches, prompting the early bullpen call.
THIRD BASE: Shut down by Webb
The Brewers' offense was held in check by Giants ace Logan Webb. Webb went six innings and gave up just one run, allowing five hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. Joey Lucchesi allowed one hit in the seventh and Spencer Bivens closed it out by yielding one hit in two innings.
HOME PLATE: Bullpen implodes
Much like closer Trevor Megill the previous night, the Brewers' bullpen doesn't have a bad game often. Right-hander Grant Anderson followed Peralta and surrendered three runs. He came into the game with a 2.92 ERA. Then rookie Carlos Rodriguez entered and coughed up a four-spot in the seventh inning to turn a tight game into a laugher at 7-1. Rodriguez did save the bullpen by pitching two more scoreless innings.
EXTRA BASES: Sunday starter TBA
⚾ The Brewers have not announced a starting pitcher for the series finale. It is likely that someone is called up from Triple-A to spot start. It is Brandon Woodruff's turn in the rotation, but he has made two straight starts on normal rest and the Brewers want to give him an extra day as he continues to come back from shoulder surgery. The Giants are going with left-hander Robbie Ray (10-6, 2.85 ERA).
⚾ John Axford, the Brewers' single-season leader in saves (46) and the record-holder for consecutive saves (43), was inducted into the Brewers' Walk of Honor.
263.2 IP. 318 K. 106 saves. Congratulations to John Axford, the 72nd member of the Brewers Wall of Honor!
