Brewers today 8/7/2025: Weekend preview: Here come the Mets

Following a day off today and a trip back home, the Milwaukee Brewers will open a three-game series at American Family Field against the New York Mets. Not only is this a rematch of the 2024 NL Wild Card Series that the Mets won in dramatic fashion, but it is a possible preview of a postseason showdown. The Brewers are coming off a 6-0 road trip against the Washington Nationals and Atlanta in which they did not commit an error.
WHERE THEY STAND
The Brewers are 70-44, holding the best record in MLB. They are four games ahead of the second-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs, who also had Thursday off, are the No. 1 NL wild card. With a .614 winning percentage, the Brewers are on pace to win a franchise-record 99 games. The most wins in franchise history is 96, set in 2011 and matched in 2018. The Brewers have won the NL Central in four of the last five seasons.
PITCHING MATCHUPS
Friday: Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (3-0, 2.22 ERA) vs. Mets RHP Kodai Senga (7-3, 2.31 ERA). Woodruff has become the Brewers' ace since returning from right shoulder surgery late in the 2023 season and not returning until July 6. Woodruff has 37 strikeouts against just four walks in 28⅓ innings for a 0.635 WHIP. Senga, meanwhile, has not been sharp in recent outings, with 11 runs and 11 walks in 12 innings.
Saturday: Brewers RHP Logan Henderson (3-0, 1.78 ERA) vs. Mets TBD. Henderson, filling the rotation spot of the injured Jacob Misiorowski, has shown that he belongs in the majors in his five starts. Henderson has eight walks and 33 strikeouts in 25⅓ innings. The Mets could be facing a bullpen game as they wait for RHP Paul Blackburn from a right shoulder impingement. Blackburn at this moment is scheduled to make one more rehab assignment.
Sunday: Brewers RHP Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.15 ERA) vs. Mets LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 3.52 ERA). Priester is one of the hottest pitchers in MLB, having won his last 10 decisions and turning in nine quality starts. Unlike Misiorowski, Priester is not likely facing an innings limit, although the Brewers will be watching him closely. Priester had 158 innings in 2023 between Triple-A and MLB (50 IP), while following that up with 121⅔ innings in the minors in 2024, also split between Triple-A and MLB (49⅔ IP) between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. Priester is at 118⅓ innings this season. Manaea will be making his sixth appearance, fifth start, after battling oblique and left elbow injuries. He was roughed up in his last outing, surrendering five runs on seven hits over 5⅔ innings of an 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Guardians in 10 innings.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Right-hander Shelby Miller, who was property of the Brewers in 2019 but never was put on the MLB roster, is expected to be activated off the 15-day injured list for Friday's series opener. A former starter, the 34-year-old has converted himself into a pretty good reliever. Before being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline, Miller had a 1.98 ERA and 0.963 WHIP in 37 games covering 36⅓ innings. While he could eventually slot in as a setup man alongside Abner Uribe, manager Pat Murphy might give Miller lower-leverage opportunities his first couple times out. Miller has been on the IL with a strained right forearm since early July.
COMING UP
After the Mets, the Pittsburgh Pirates will come to Am Fam Field for three games. Pirates ace Paul Skenes, who faced the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, is likely to pitch Tuesday, the second game of the series. After taking next week Thursday off, the Brewers face their biggest road trip of the season, traveling for three games against the pesky Cincinnati Reds, then the five-game showdown vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field, beginning with a Monday doubleheader. Trying to project the Brewers' rotation for the Cubs series, it could be Jose Quintana and Henderson in the doubleheader, with Misiorowski, Woodruff and Priester following. That would require some sort of juggling with Henderson, who would be the likely candidate to be sent down when Misiorowski returns, which should be Friday against the Reds.
